Although born in Carlisle, England, Mike grew up in Nairobi, Kenya, until he was eight. Mike initially began his creative journey as a musician and composer, before transitioning to acting in experimental theatre - this sparked a deeper interest in directing and cinematography. After being unable to get into film school, Figgis then began making his own experimental films, which eventually led to his big break with Channel 4, where he directed The House for TV.

My vision is driven by a fascination with light, inspired by iconic photographers and the 60's New Wave. I love the creative freedom to explore alternative narratives with a small, agile crew.

I’ve been using Nikon for over 40 years, starting with a Nikkormat and a NIKKOR 50mm lens. Nikon's reliability and adaptability have always been key in my work. The Z series, in particular, has transformed my filmmaking thanks to its exceptional versatility and unparalleled high-quality performance. Of all the work I have shot using a Nikon, my latest project, MEGA DOC, has been my favourite. For this project, I used two Z series bodies and a mix of Z series and standard lenses with an adaptor. The gear's precision and flexibility allowed me to capture every moment exactly as envisioned, meeting the demands of both cinematic storytelling and real-time documentary work.
